January 9th, 2009 at 00:22:44 Good old Dick, my cabin was inspired by him... I think he would be happy. Have a look and see what you think.
January 9th, 2009 at 00:45:43 dick didn't leave in 1969 and live in complete isolation for 35 years. He had all kinds of visitors. And I also wouldn't be surprised if he built a few special mounts of his own like UWsnow suggests.
January 9th, 2009 at 01:08:42 I was wondering about that too - but you could do it with a pivot mount connected to a spool, or some mechanism. Also, the camera is a wind up model... Over the years there were lots of devices available for 8mm or 16mm cameras - and I would not be surprised if he made some of his own devices. He was a mechanic and my guess is that he had a turning lathe available to fabricate basically any mechanism that you can imagine. Another possibility is that at times he had a pilot shoot some footage.
January 9th, 2009 at 01:31:41 It seems some of this footage is in fact shot by a cameraman, sometimes you can see the view shake or move a bit when Proenneke is in frame. The canoe bit for example. Still, some great footage. A real man.
January 9th, 2009 at 01:54:40 i've seen lots of eco-abodes but i've yet to see those. pretty neat design. thanks for the info! i really like the adobe-type building materials. "die gerade linie ist gottlos" as they say, and with a plaster like that, you can have as many curves as you want. if i had the land on which to build, within a few weeks i could have all the materials to build a wonderful home. another few weeks and i'd be confident and practices enough to tackle the job!
January 9th, 2009 at 02:17:39 "my goal in life is to find some sort of balance between living completely wild and completely enslaved in society. we have technology now to make life comfortable and sustainable for every single person on earth. just gotta push." Google "Earthships", sounds like your kind of thing. It's the future for living off the grid, and it's getting more and more popular now (obviously good news)
January 9th, 2009 at 02:40:38 I love this, thanks for posting. I grew up watching this on TV and wanted to show my husband (from England), was so glad to find this.
January 9th, 2009 at 03:03:37 This has to be one of the most intriguing and interesting documents of ones mans dream to live in the wilderness. To watch him construct his living quarters is absolutely fascinating. If you ever get a chance to see the full movie, take the time to watch it!
January 9th, 2009 at 03:26:36 It may be that his voice was altered as a result of the bout with Rheumatic fever that he survived in 1945. There is a good Wikipedia page on Richard Proenneke Thanks for uploading this!
January 9th, 2009 at 03:49:35 strawme01 (18 hours ago) "I learned it from your mom while she was humped by my dog. I do not know why she kept calling your dad's name. Is your dad a dog?" Wow, you are one creative person! My mother has been dead for 22 years and my father for almost 19, but thanks for showing the world how credible your opinion is on virtually anything. Peace.
January 9th, 2009 at 04:12:34 I learned it from your mom while she was humped by my dog. I do not know why she kept calling your dad's name. Is your dad a dog?
January 9th, 2009 at 04:35:33 I didn't mean retarded in a offensive way, I should have said unique. I have the Frozen North, I may upload a similar video to this one with clips from it. I believe the one you are referring to was the "Alaska: Silence & Solitude" and the two others were Bob Swerer and his son.
January 9th, 2009 at 04:58:32 I seen him on pbs with two other people who returned to his cabin to vist. He seem, to have a common voice but, But , in no way retared. Do you have any clips of the Frozen north with him narations.,

January 9th, 2009 at 08:02:24 No, no, and no. He narrates "The Frozen North" and sounds slightly retarded.
January 9th, 2009 at 08:25:23 was he ever married , Does he have any children. Did he own the land he build his cabin on. I have only heard him speak briefly, his voice is much better than the one on the films.
January 9th, 2009 at 08:48:22 This guy puts Thoreau to shame.
January 9th, 2009 at 09:11:21 I read the book on him, It's to bad the day of actually doing something like that are long gone. you cant even so much as sink a one holer latrine on your own property without a county 'building permit' Dick did this back when homesteading in Alaska was still available.. it is no longer available.
