Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and the poverty has fuelled restavek, a system of domestic servitude of hundreds of thousands of children that is tantamount to modern-day slavery. The country's government acknowledges that child slaves exist but says it is part of the culture. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports.

    there was such a time?!
  2. Roderik Says:
Unfortunately, this is one of the harsh realities facing children. Working with my non-profit organization New Face Foundation, it is our goal to help parents by providing school supplies in Cap-Haitien, Haiti at the beginning of the school year. It is our start because we believe that getting those kids in school will change their future

I really enjoyed youtube better when idiots were not allowed to post comments.
  6. Ferguson Says:
Great! Youd still be safer there if you kept your filthy mouth shut than in that Haitian ghetto of Miami, plain SCARY dump. I will most likely live longer than you. Dominicans have longer life expectancy- I mean, almost everyone lives longer than a Haitian, really. What, are you gonna cast some voodoo shit on me now?
  7. Tempeste Says:
O please, ill never step foot in that dominican ghetto. Do me a favor and just die now
  8. Osrik Says:
"I embrace my Haitian side more than my colombian side" Someone's GOT an ethnic/racial hang up. Good for you to help and love your people, I LOVE MINE, and won't let hate vermin like you to put them down undeservedly. Do ya live in New York City? Try yout RACIST rant shit up in Washington Heights if you got the BALLS to. They will shred you to pieces. And, expat Dominicans invest heavily in their country, so why Haitians don't? I live in MY OWN country, vermin. Why don't YOU SETTLE in Haiti?
  9. PASIPHAE Says:
I don't make stuff up, pcarrie84. I DON'T HAVE TO. Check health statistics in the DR. FACT: AIDS cases in/around Haitian enclaves in the DR is TRIPLE of the national rate. FACT: MALARIA, once virtually under control in the DR, has become ENDEMIC in areas where illegal Haitian settle. And YOU know what A HAITIAN once told me? That DR prostitutes go to Haiti there because well-off HAITIAN men PREFER them to the locals. Why? better-looking, cleaner, and LESS RISK of disease. HUM, RACIAL PROFILING?
  10. SEBASTIANA Says:
How many of them DR prostitutes in the Haiti? Let's give you a couple hundreds, the most. And of the 2 MILLION Haitians here, there are PLENTY of prostitutes -and not- who get laid with anything that moves here in the DR for MONEY. I don't put down these women in a any form, they do it to SURVIVE, -shame on YOU since you don't have to-. With the ENORMOUS child prostitution problem you have in Haiti, I'd be VERY careful to even BRING that issue up. Why is it that Haitians pay DR prostitutes?
  11. Bhric Says:
and me being an "economic refugee from haiti" I was born and raised in New York, and I'm HAlf haitian half colombian.. I embrace my haitian side more than my colombian side, I love my culture, and the people, and cant wait to go to haiti soon, as I had the most wonderful time the first time i went. And my family and myself, bring clothes and other needs to haiti whenever family memebers go.
  12. LATHROP Says:
Lets not talk about Dominican Prostitues in haiti, trying to bring their diseases all around town.
  13. PAKUNA Says:
I do nothing for my people??? dont even go their u idiotic fuck. You dont know how much money my family brings to help out the poor. I bet u never even step foot in haiti, all the dominicans that talk shit no nothing about the country.
  14. Odiana Says:
Certeroooo, you can allege all you want, but if you have a short memory I suggest that you read some of your recent comments which you wrote all over Youtube. I don´t see how this kind of comments help anyone, but of course you´re free to explain it to us.
  15. Hudson Says:
Not that there aren't local street children here begging, because there are. But you don't see children as young as the Haitians, or even worse, the mothers pimping them to beg while they watch. I think it has to do more with a mindset from their own culture than anything else, and that would be eventually changed with economic advancement and education.
  16. Launder Says:
I agree, jlemaire22. I'm done with the exchange with fraulein Mariposa: it is about she having the absolute LAST word, than about DR/Haiti issues. I'd be going to Haiti and help there instead. There is a lot of child poverty in the DR, although helping government and private institutions are far more active and visible than in Haiti. Almost daily, I see Haitian young children here begging from drivers at street corners WHILE the MOTHERS WATCH from a short distance. That is truly distrubing.
  17. MUT Says:
I can't believe that after watching a story about child slavery you all are having an argument about Haiti vs. Dominican Republic. As if that is more important. That is absolutely sad.
  18. Rodd Says:
Mariposa, there are pages here on the Dominican Rep that have been targeted by Haitian hate comments just hours later of being posted. For no reason at all, no mention of Haitians in any form, whatsoever. You are too blissfully and intentionally BLIND to see that. Your one-sided ignorance on Dominican issues and culture is appaling. But that's also a big joke for you. I'm done with replying to your silly girl rants: you don't even live on this island, your comments won't change reality either.
  19. Kasey Says:
"Haitians have the -one of many- NASTY habits of going on Dominican YouTube pages where no mention of them is made in the first place, to spill their ranting hate" That´s really a good joke. Make some more of this kind and I´ll even believe you that you´re really too blind too see what Dominicans have been doing for months.
  20. Gretchen Says:
Yes right, that´s the nature of prostitution: supply and demand, like in all sectors of the free market economy. That´s why normally I don´t care for it and don´t criticize it either. But as long as you point your fingers on Haitians, even when they have not said anything offensive, I will point mine on you. so easy is it - got the message?
  21. Elvyn Says:
Mariposa, you got to have the last word, don't you? But 1)Haitians have the -one of many- NASTY habits of going on Dominican YouTube pages where no mention of them is made in the first place, to spill their ranting hate, 2)Check pcarrie84's profile, I bet you a million dollars that I'm right, and 3)last time I checked, there were many hairy German frauleins and fraus at the beaches here "shopping" for sankys who by they way, are in their own country not stealing anybody else's jobs. Enough said.
  22. Kalei Says:
"pcarrie84, you are an economic refugee from Haiti in the US" How do you know that, do you know him personally? Or do you just conclude it for being Haitian? In this case, don´t be surprised if someone calls you a sanky panky, just for being Dominican.
  23. ATHALIA Says:
Certerooo, nobody has the time to read all stupid comments all over Youtube. But what I have read so far from Dominicans,is enough to vomit the whole day. But what I find soooo strange is that the person you insulted on THIS page, had NOT said anything offensive. Did you not complain, some days ago, that I would "generalize" about dominicans writing derogatory comments? What about you? when one Haitian insults you,you take the right to insult another one for it? What a brilliant logic, again.
  24. ALITASH Says:
I guess you missed those Haitians calling me faggot, nazi or other beauties in other pages you have visited. You always miss it (sooo strange). When they stop posting garbage on Dominican videos or fabricating stuff, I'll stop. Respect, tolerance and understading are perhaps words missing from that Creole semi-language. Viel spass!
  25. SIDNEY Says:
pcarrie84, you are an economic refugee from Haiti in the US. While you are not in Haiti and doing NOTHING for your people, I gave a dollar to a begging little Haitian girl today. Perhaps she will not be turned into another prostitute. Of course, this is too complicated for you to understand. HaiSHITian
